MY View - Scientific Open Access
Open access generates much debate and discussion in the academic, publishing, government and library communities; the level of passion and acrimony surrounding this topic tends to produce more heat than light. Come and find out from some of the leading scientific open access visionaries from the academic, publishing, government and library communities what the future may hold---are any of the current open access publishing models viable, how advances in technology going to change open access, how are libraries going to be able to deal with the explosion of open access materials. Major groups involved with open access are librarians, publishers, scientists and institutional repositories. Each of these groups want something different from open access and bring their particular view point. Hence the title, MY View."

  1. Participants will gain an understanding of the current status of open access, the challenges facing libraries, universities, academics and publishers in dealing with this issue and the future direction of open access.

DCHE/DENG Breakfast and Corporate/Academic Roundtable on Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELN)
Electronic Laboratory Notebooks, or ELNs are more than a simple alternative to the traditional paper laboratory notebook. Current technologies make ELN critical for R&D collaboration, knowledge management and productivity. Although well established particularly in the pharmaceutical world, ELNs by providing a variety of research solutions, are quickly moving into the mainstream for all industry and many disciplines in academia. Some of the questions to be addressed include the following.What are ELNs? With the many choices, how do we decide what ELN is right for our organization? What is the librarian’s role in the transition to and implementation of the ELN.

Analysis of Patent and Other Large Bibliographic Data Sets
Visualization techniques find ample source material in bibliographic, patent, or information-rich web content.  Librarians and Information Professionals are being called on to provide content and an understanding of context to create large data sets for evaluation.  For example, a well defined search on a technology may result in many thousands of patents and technical papers.  Data visualization can assist technical experts detect trends or opportunities in this technology space.  This session brings the three perspectives:  1) corporate information professional, 2) solution provider, and 3) library student’s examination of available analysis tools.

Program Take-Aways

  1. Participants will gain an understanding of the role of a technical librarian in creating analysis datasets include patent portfolios, competitive landscapes, and white space (discovery) projects.

  2. Participants will see the interactive features, dashboard access, and visualizations from an Intellixir analysis project.

  3. Participants will hear about the major players and products for analysis and visualization and take away a handout comparing product features."
