SPOTLIGHT SESSION - It's a Brave MOOC World: Challenges and Opportunities for Librarians
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are gaining in popularity as another tool in the expanding field of learning technologies. At the same time, the librarian’s role is being redefined as many move from traditional reference and instruction roles to offering more integrated and embedded information services, whether via subject-specific or general expertise. What opportunities do MOOCs offer for librarians, and how can librarians adapt to and take advantage of the opportunities offered by this new platform? In this panel discussion, three MOOC practitioners will discuss where librarians can “fit” as embedded learners, connectors and collaborators within the MOOC learning environment. Q & A to follow.

Program Take-Aways

  1. Participants will gain an understanding of what MOOCs are, what they offer, and how they compare to traditional methods of instruction.

  2. Participants will learn a variety of roles that information professionals can play within MOOCs based on research and the experience of presenters as MOOC teachers, facilitators and students.

  3. Participants will have the chance to ask questions of presenters to more concretely link the proposed roles with their individual experiences with MOOCs.

difficult nature of it? To what extent might researchers need to alter their work practices?  What are the incentives for the scientists?

This is a big topic with many ramifications.  While we cannot treat all of them, the speakers will explain possibilities for advancing reproducible computational research.
